PLAR - Prior Learning Assessment and Recognition

What is PLAR?

PLAR is a process that allows individuals to identify, document, have assessed and gain recognition for prior learning. The learning may be formal, informal, or experiential. Examples of where you can acquire learning:

  • On-the-job training
  • Non-credit courses / independent study
  • Military service
  • Community and family activities
  • Hobbies and volunteer activities

Get the Credit You Deserve

The work you do at Walmart, in-house training and/or your previous postsecondary experience could reduce the amount of time it will take to complete a credential.

Through AdvancED, Walmart associates are eligible for a special PLAR package rate:  $95 per course for which PLAR is granted up to a maximum of $285 per program. These fees will be posted to your MyHumber account. Fee payments must be made through online banking. Visit humber.ca/fees for payment options.

AdvancED - Business Management Diploma PLAR Agreement

Current and former Walmart Assistant Store Managers, Co-Managers and Store Managers can receive credit for completing in-house training programs such as Harvard Leadership Tune Up or Management Essentials, along with their work experience. Humber has pre-assessed Walmart’s in-house training and will give credit for the following courses to eligible individuals who confirm an offer to the Business Management Diploma program:

BMGT 100 – Introduction to Business
BMGT 253 – Leadership
BUSN 250 – Business Placement

In addition to the above courses, these associates can also submit a portfolio to determine their eligibility to receive credit for WRIT 200 – Workplace Writing Skills.

How to apply for AdvancED - Business Management Diploma PLAR Agreement:

  1. Complete the AdvancED Information Request Form if you haven’t already. GET STARTED
  2. Apply to Humber’s Business Management Diploma program (02251) at ontariocolleges.ca.
  3. Receive an Offer of Admission to the Business Management Diploma program if eligible.
  4. Confirm your Offer of Admission at ontariocolleges.ca.
  5. Email transferopportunities@humber.ca. after confirming your Offer of Admission to the Business Management Diploma program to have an advisor provide instructions on how to submit your PLAR portfolio.
  6. Pay your PLAR fees through online banking. PLAR fees will be posted to your MyHumber account. Visit humber.ca/fees for payment options.

How to apply for PLAR for all other Humber programs:

If you are applying to another program at Humber and you feel the skills gained from your previous work, life or volunteer experience matches the learning outcomes for a Humber course in your program, you may also be eligible to receive PLAR credit.

Follow the steps below to apply for PLAR:

Obtain the current course outline(s) from the Faculty responsible for delivering the course.

Review the course outline to determine if your knowledge and skills match the course learning outcomes.

Search Humber Course Outlines

Consult with the program coordinator for clarification and to help you with matching your experience and learning to the course learning outcomes.

Prepare Documentation

If your program coordinator requests a portfolio submission, collect documents that support the application for PLAR. These might include a: resume, a description of experiences and learning that relate to the course being challenged, work samples, or letters of verification.

If your coordinator requests that you sit for a challenge exam, please follow the steps below and the faculty will arrange your exam once you have submitted your application and payment to the Office of the Registrar.

Submit your application form and supporting documents to the Office of the Registrar at the campus you are attending. If you are mailing in your application and form, please include your email address and phone number.

The form and supporting documents are submitted to the course assessor who may contact students to arrange for additional demonstration of learning (personal interview, test or demonstration).
